About us
About us

Richard is newly retired following a long career as a Senior Finance Executive with wide-ranging commercial and financial experience in many leadership roles. He has significant experience of financial control, risk management, governance processes and audit.

He is a Chartered Accountant who, having trained with Grant Thornton, moved to join BDO Binder Hamlyn in Leeds where he was Senior Audit Manager for several years. He then moved into industry in 1994 to become Group Financial Controller of Gartland, Whalley and Barker plc, where he gained experience in corporate acquisitions and the development of publicly listed industrial groups. In 2002 he joined Marshalls plc, the leading UK manufacturer of sustainable solutions for the built environment, where he was Group Financial Controller at their head office in Elland for over 20 years.

Cricket has been a large part of Richard’s life for the last 50 years. He has participated as a player, junior coach, club official, administrator and umpire for Copley Cricket Club in the Halifax League. He served as Chairman between 2005 and 2018 and during this period the club became a community focused YCB Focus Club, prioritising community engagement and the development of the Junior Section and opportunities for women and girls. This led to the winning of significant grants from the ECB and other funding partners to develop the club’s facilities. He is currently Treasurer and a Trustee, and the club continues to work closely with several local charities and community groups. Richard is also a member of Yorkshire County Cricket Club.

Richard lives in Halifax with his wife and has three grown up children and two grandchildren. His family have grown up watching Huddersfield Town and have been keen supporters and season ticket holders for nearly 25 years. Richard is delighted to be a Trustee of the Foundation and is keen to ensure that his experience and skillset can contribute to its continued development.
